Tuesday, October 1st, 2024

THE 4:30 MOVIE (VOD/Digital)

• Synopsis: In the summer of 1986, three sixteen year old friends spend their Saturdays sneaking into movies at the local multiplex. But when one of the guys also invites the girl of his dreams to see the latest comedy, each of the teens learn more about life and love.

• Fun Fact: In a mid-credits scene at the end, the Kevin Smith-avatar character is encouraged by his friends to apply for a job at the Quick Mart.

DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE (PVOD)

• Synopsis: A listless Wade Wilson toils away in civilian life with his days as the morally flexible mercenary, Deadpool, behind him. But when his homeworld faces an existential threat, Wade must reluctantly suit-up again with an even more reluctant Wolverine.

• Fun Fact: Reynolds's co-chairman of the Wrexham Football Club Rob McElhenney filmed a cameo as a TVA soldier, but his appearance was ultimately cut.

EVIL DOES NOT EXIST (The Criterion Channel)

• Synopsis: Takumi and his daughter Hana live in Mizubiki Village, close to Tokyo. One day, the village inhabitants become aware of a plan to build a camping site near Takumi's house offering city residents a comfortable "escape" to nature.

• Fun Fact: Director Ryûsuke Hamaguchi decided to cast Hitoshi Omika in the lead role after Omika spent time driving Hamaguchi around to rural locations in Japan to pick out locations to film for the director's concert film "Gift".

MADE IN ENGLAND: THE FILMS OF POWELL AND PRESSBURGER (VOD/Digital)

• Synopsis: Martin Scorsese presents this very personal and insightful new feature-length documentary about British filmmakers Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger.

• Fun Fact: Michael Powell was married to Scorsese’s longtime film editor Thelma Schoonmaker.

MY PENGUIN FRIEND (VOD/Digital)

• Synopsis: A lost penguin rescued from an oil spill transforms the life of a heartbroken fisherman. They become unlikely friends, so bonded that even the vast ocean cannot divide them.

• Fun Fact: Cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle won an Oscar for lensing Slumdog Millionaire.

SPEAK NO EVIL (PVOD)

• Synopsis: When an American family is invited to spend the weekend at the idyllic country estate of a charming British family they befriended on vacation, what begins as a dream holiday soon warps into a snarled psychological nightmare.

• Fun Fact: James McAvoy said he purposely didn't watch the original Danish Speak No Evil (2022) before he started work on this remake, so it wouldn't influence the interpretation of his role. He watched it within 24 hours after filming concluded, and was very impressed.

STRANGE DARLING (VOD/Digital)

• Synopsis: Nothing is what it seems when a twisted one-night stand spirals into a serial killer’s vicious murder spree.

• Fun Fact: Primarily known for his acting roles, this film marks Giovanni Ribisi's debut as a feature film cinematographer.

THE WASP (VOD/Digital)

• Synopsis: Heather bumps into Carla, having not spoken to her in years, and presents her with a very unexpected proposition that could change both of their lives forever.

• Fun Fact: In 2023, writer Morgan Lloyd Malcolm co-wrote the book for Cake, a musical celebrating the life of Marie Antoinette. It’s set to run in London’s West End this fall.

HOLD YOUR BREATH (Hulu)

• Synopsis: A young mother in 1930s Oklahoma who is haunted by her past and trapped in horrifying dust storms. She becomes convinced that her family is threatened by a mysterious presence and takes extraordinary measures to protect them.

• Fun Fact: Sarah Paulson replaced Claire Foy in the lead role. Foy dropped out due to scheduling conflicts.

HOUSE OF SPOILS (Prime Video)

• Synopsis: An ambitious chef opens a restaurant on a remote estate where she battles kitchen chaos, crushing self doubts… and a haunting presence who threatens to sabotage her at every turn.

• Fun Fact: Arian Moayed, who played Stewy on Succession, has a supporting role in the film.

SALEM’S LOT (Max)

• Synopsis: Author Ben Mears returns to his childhood home of Jerusalem's Lot only to discover his hometown is being preyed upon by a bloodthirsty vampire.

• Fun Fact: This is Gary Dauberman’s second feature as a director. He previously helmed 2019’s Annabelle Comes Home.

WE GROWN NOW (Netflix)

• Synopsis: In 1992 Chicago, a story of two young legends in their own right begins. As wide-eyed and imaginative best friends Malik and Eric traverse the city, looking to escape the mundaneness of school and the hardships of growing up in public housing, their unbreakable bond is challenged when tragedy shakes their community just as they are learning to fly.

• Fun Fact: The film was nominated for Best Feature at this year’s Film Independent Spirit Awards.

DÌDI - Peacock

• Synopsis: In 2008, during the last month of summer before high school begins, an impressionable 13-year-old Taiwanese American boy learns what his family can't teach him: how to skate, how to flirt, and how to love your mom.

• Fun Fact: Lead Isaac Wang co-starred in the 2019 raunchy comedy Good Boys.

IT’S WHAT’S INSIDE (Netflix)

• Synopsis: A pre-wedding party descends into an existential nightmare when an estranged friend shows up with a mysterious suitcase.

• Fun Fact: The film sold for $17M at this year’s Sundance, which was the biggest sale of the festival.

THE KILLER’S GAME (PVOD)

• Synopsis: When a top hitman is diagnosed with a terminal illness, he decides to take matters into his own hands – by taking a hit out on himself. But when the very hitmen he hired also target his pregnant ex-girlfriend, he must fend off an army of assassin colleagues and win back the love of his life before it’s too late.

• Fun Fact: While in development at STX Studios, Jason Stathem was attached to star.

THE PLATFORM 2 (Netflix)

• Synopsis: As a mysterious leader imposes their rule in the Platform, a new resident becomes embroiled in the battle against this controversial method to fight the brutal feeding system. But when eating from the wrong plate becomes a death sentence, how far would you be willing to go to save your life?

• Fun Fact: Lead Hovik Keuchkerian was a two-time Spanish heavyweight boxing champion.

RED ROOMS (VOD/Digital)

• Synopsis: The high-profile case of serial killer Ludovic Chevalier has just gone to trial, and Kelly-Anne is obsessed. When reality blurs with her morbid fantasies, she goes down a dark path to seek the final piece of the case’s puzzle.

• Fun Fact: Director Pascal Plante was inspired by serial killer groupies, who appear out of nowhere for each serial killer in the news, and are seen rooting for them at their trials.

THINGS WILL BE DIFFERENT (VOD/Digital)

• Synopsis: In order to escape the police after a robbery, two estranged siblings lay low in a metaphysical farmhouse that hides them away in a different time. There they reckon with a mysterious force that pushes their familial bonds to unnatural breaking points.

• Fun Fact: Cinematographer Carissa Dorson also shoots episodes of The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula on Shudder.

V/H/S BEYOND (Shudder, AMC+)

• Synopsis: The infinite playground of forbidden worlds and dangerous lifeforms offered by the sci-fi horror genre will lead to the biggest, maddest, bloodiest V/H/S ever.

• Fun Fact: Jordan Downey's segment "Stork" is a live adaptation of internet horror artist Oleg Vdovenko's art piece of the same name.

BAD BOYS: RIDE OR DIE (Netflix)

• Synopsis: After their late former Captain is framed, Lowrey and Burnett try to clear his name, only to end up on the run themselves.

• Fun Fact: Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, and Joe Pantoliano are the only cast members who have appeared in all four Bad Boys films.

HELLBOY: THE CROOKED MAN (VOD/Digital)

• Synopsis: Hellboy and a rookie BPRD agent get stranded in 1950s rural Appalachia. There, they discover a small community haunted by witches, led by a local devil with a troubling connection to Hellboy's past: the Crooked Man.

• Fun Fact: Unlike the other three live-action Hellboy films, Mike Mignola, creator of the character, received a credit on this film for co-writing the screenplay.

CADDO LAKE (Max)

• Synopsis: When an 8-year-old girl mysteriously vanishes on Caddo Lake, a series of past deaths and disappearances begin to link together, forever altering a broken family’s history.

• Fun Fact: M. Night Shyamalan is a producer on the film under his production label Blinding Edge Pictures.

THE LAST OF THE SEA WOMEN (Apple TV+)

• Synopsis: On the shores of Jeju Island, a fierce group of South Korean divers fight to save their vanishing culture from looming threats.

• Fun Fact: Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani activist who in 2014, at just 17, became the youngest-ever recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, is a producer on the film.

LONELY PLANET (Netflix)

• Synopsis: At an idyllic writers retreat in Morocco, a newly single novelist finds an unexpected connection with a younger man who's reevaluating his life choices.

• Fun Fact: Writer-Director Susanna Grant got an Oscar nomination for writing the script for 2000’s Erin Brockovich.

STING (Hulu)

• Synopsis: After raising an unnervingly talented spider in secret, 12-year-old Charlotte must face the truth about her pet and fight for her family's survival.\

• Fun Fact: Sting the spider is very much like the Australian red back spider which is one of the most venomous spiders.

TUESDAY (Max)

• Synopsis: A mother and her teenage daughter must confront Death when it arrives in the form of an astonishing talking bird.

• Fun Fact: Lola Petticrew was 25 years old when they played the titular 15-year-old.

ALIEN: ROMULUS (VOD/Digital - Sale Only)

• Synopsis: While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.

• Fun Fact: Director Fede Alvarez sought out the special effects crew from Aliens (1986) to work on the creatures. Physical sets, practical creatures, and miniatures were used wherever possible to help ground later VFX work.

THE THREE MUSKETEERS: D’ARTAGNAN (Hulu)

• Synopsis: D'Artagnan, a spirited young Gascon, is left for dead after trying to save a noblewoman from being kidnapped. Once in Paris, he tries by all means to find his attackers, unaware that his quest will lead him to the very heart of a war where the future of France is at stake. Aided by King's Musketeers Athos, Porthos and Aramis, he faces the machinations of villainous Cardinal Richelieu and Milady de Winter, while falling in love with Constance, the Queen's confidante.

• Fun Fact: François Civil, who plays D’Artagnan, performed 90% of his own stunts in the two films following an intense six-month preparation on fencing, sword-fighting and horseback riding.

THE THREE MUSKETEERS: MILADY (Hulu)

• Synopsis: D'Artagnan, on a quest to rescue the abducted Constance, runs into the mysterious Milady de Winter again. The tension between the Catholics and the Protestants finally escalates, as the king declares war — forcing the now four musketeers into battle. But as the war goes on, they are tested physically, mentally and emotionally.

• Fun Fact: The film was shot back to back with its prequel The Three Musketeers - Part I: D'Artagnan (2023) for a total shoot of 150 days.

Friday, October 18th, 2024

MAXXXINE (Max)

• Synopsis: In 1980s Hollywood, adult film star and aspiring actress Maxine Minx finally gets her big break. But as a mysterious killer stalks the starlets of Hollywood, a trail of blood threatens to reveal her sinister past.

• Fun Fact: Mia Goth is the granddaughter of Brazilian actress Maria Gladys. As Goth became more popular in Brazil, this became a popular curiosity and ended up going viral. Marketing for the film in Brazil decided to exploit this and "The granddaughter of Brazilian actress Maria Gladys" succeeded Goth's name whenever it was mentioned while promoting the movie, despite Gladys having no connection to it.

WOMAN OF THE HOUR (Netflix)

• Synopsis: The stranger-than-fiction story of an aspiring actor in 1970s Los Angeles and a serial killer in the midst of a years-long murder spree, whose lives intersect when they're cast on an episode of The Dating Game.

• Fun Fact: Netflix acquired the film for a reported $11 million shortly after its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival.

Thursday, October 24th, 2024

CANARY BLACK (Prime Video)

• Synopsis: Top level CIA agent Avery Graves is blackmailed by terrorists into betraying her own country to save her kidnapped husband. Cut off from her team, she turns to her underworld contacts to survive and help locate the coveted intelligence that the kidnappers want.

• Fun Fact: From the director of the original Taken, Pierre Morel.

Friday, October 25th, 2024

AZRAEL (Shudder, AMC+)

• Synopsis: In a world where no one speaks, a devout female hunts down a young woman who has escaped her imprisonment. Recaptured by its ruthless leaders, Azrael is due to be sacrificed to pacify an ancient evil deep within the surrounding wilderness.

• Fun Fact: The production created an artificial moon in the Pärispea forest during filming by using a system of connected floodlights hoisted by a crane.

DON’T MOVE (Netflix)

• Synopsis: A grieving woman hoping to find solace deep in an isolated forest encounters a stranger who injects her with a paralytic agent. As the agent gradually takes over her body, she must run, hide, and fight for her life before her entire nervous system shuts down.

• Fun Fact: Evil Dead creator Sam Raimi is a producer on the film.

TRAP (Max)

• Synopsis: A father and teen daughter attend a pop concert, where they realize they're at the center of a dark and sinister event.

• Fun Fact: According to M. Night Shyamalan, the pitch and concept of the movie revolved around the question "What if The Silence of the Lambs (1991) happened at a Taylor Swift concert?".

Monday, October 28th, 2024

EZRA (Paramount+ w/Showtime)

• Synopsis: Stand-up comedian Max Bernal lives with his father Stan while struggling to co-parent his autistic son Ezra with his ex-wife. When forced to confront difficult decisions about their son's future, Max and Ezra embark on a cross-country road trip that has a transcendent impact on both their lives.

• Fun Fact: Tony Goldwyn directs Whoopi Goldberg, his co-star in Ghost (1990).

TREASURE (Paramount+ w/Showtime)

• Synopsis: A music journalist accompanies her father, a charmingly stubborn Holocaust survivor, on a journey to his homeland. While she's eager to make sense of her family's past, her dad has an agenda of his own.

• Fun Fact: The picture of her ex-husband which Ruth uses as a bookmark, is a picture of Lena Dunham's husband Luis Felber. They have been married since 2021.

THE CRITIC (VOD/Digital)

• Synopsis: Jimmy Erskine is the most feared theatre critic of the age. He lives as flamboyantly as he writes and takes pleasure in savagely taking down any actor who fails to meet his standards. When the owner of the Daily Chronicle dies, and his son takes over, Jimmy quickly finds himself at odds with his new boss and his position under threat. In an attempt to preserve the power and influence he holds so sacred, Jimmy strikes a Faustian pact with a struggling actress, entangling them and the boss in a thrilling but deadly web of desire, blackmail, and betrayal.

• Fun Fact: Premiered at TIFF 2023 with mixed reviews and a dark ending that turned the audience off. The film's distributor requested re-shoots to take place in March/April 2024 and a new cut of the film including a new ending.

THE EXORCISM (Shudder, AMC+)

• Synopsis: A troubled actor begins to unravel while shooting a supernatural horror film, leading his estranged daughter to wonder if he's slipping back into his past addictions or if there's something more sinister at play.

• Fun Fact: Director Joshua John Miller is son of Jason Miller, the actor who played Father Damien Karras in The Exorcist (1973).

MARTHA (Netflix)

• Synopsis: The definitive documentary on Martha Stewart, featuring a series of candid interviews with the icon herself. From her early start on Wall Street to becoming the original influencer, Stewart continues to reinvent herself with each passing decade.

• Fun Fact: Stewart is the only interview subject featured on camera in the documentary.

TIME CUT (Netflix)

• Synopsis: Lucy, a modern high school senior and amateur inventor, finds a time machine and travels back to 2003, the year her sister was murdered by a serial killer. Now torn between solving the mystery that has undone her parents and her hometown, saving the sister that she never knew, and irreparably altering the future – and her own existence – Lucy must decide how to stop the slasher, save her family, and blend into 2003.

• Sad Fact: Halyna Hutchins, the cinematographer who was shot and killed on the set of the film Rust in 2021, was a contributing Director of Photography on this film.

DESPICABLE ME 4 - Peacock

• Synopsis: Gru and Lucy and their girls—Margo, Edith and Agnes—welcome a new member to the Gru family, Gru Jr., who is intent on tormenting his dad. Gru also faces a new nemesis in Maxime Le Mal and his femme fatale girlfriend Valentina, forcing the family to go on the run.

• Fun Fact: Steve Carell (Gru), Miranda Cosgrove (Margo), Dana Gaier (Edith) and Pierre Coffin (The Minions) are the only cast members to voice their respective characters in all four main movies. Even though Kristen Wiig (Lucy) was also in the first movie, she voiced a different character, Miss Hattie.
