TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS: WALLED IN (VOD/Digital)

• Synopsis: Set in the 1980s, troubled youth Chan Lok-kwun accidentally enters the Walled City, discovers the order amidst its chaos, and learns important life lessons along the way. In the Walled City, he becomes close friends with Shin, Twelfth Master and AV. Under the leadership of Cyclone, they resist against the invasion of villain Mr. Big in a series of fierce battles. Together, they vow to protect the safe haven that is Kowloon Walled City.

• Fun Fact: A life-sized replica of the Kowloon Walled City, said to be almost identical to the real one, was built for filming.

IMAGINARY (Starz)

• Synopsis: When Jessica moves back into her childhood home with her family, her youngest stepdaughter Alice develops an eerie attachment to a stuffed bear named Chauncey she finds in the basement. Alice starts playing games with Chauncey that begin playful and become increasingly sinister. As Alice’s behavior becomes more and more concerning, Jessica intervenes only to realize Chauncey is much more than the stuffed toy bear she believed him to be.

• Fun Fact: National treasure Annette Bening had to sit through a Chauncey interview on the Kelly Clarkson Show. A dark moment in our nation’s history.

I USED TO BE FUNNY (Netflix)

• Synopsis: Sam is a young stand-up comedian and au pair struggling with PTSD, who is weighing whether or not to join the search for Brooke, a missing girl she used to nanny.

• Fun Fact: The film won the Audience Award at the 2023 Inside Out Film Festival.

THE BOY AND THE HERON (Max)

• Synopsis: While the Second World War rages, the teenage Mahito, haunted by his mother's tragic death, is relocated from Tokyo to the serene rural home of his new stepmother Natsuko, a woman who bears a striking resemblance to the boy's mother. As he tries to adjust, this strange new world grows even stranger following the appearance of a persistent gray heron, who perplexes and bedevils Mahito, dubbing him the "long-awaited one."

• Fun Fact: The first Best Animated Feature Oscar winner to receive a PG-13 rating.

THE GOOD HALF (VOD/Digital)

• Synopsis: An emotionally distant writer returns to his hometown of Cleveland for his beloved mother’s funeral, after having spent years successfully avoiding interactions with his high-strung sister, bumbling but well-meaning father, and untrustworthy step-father. While in town, he forges a new relationship with a charming, energetic stranger who pushes him to realize that he can’t avoid conflict forever — with his family or within himself.

• Fun Fact: Director Robert Schwartzman is the brother of actor Jason Schwartzman, the son of actress Talia Shire, the nephew of Francis Ford Coppola, and the cousin of Nicolas Cage and Sofia Coppola.

REBEL RIDGE (Netflix)

• Synopsis: A former Marine confronts corruption in a small town when local law enforcement unjustly seizes the bag of cash he needs to post his cousin's bail.

• Fun Fact: Star Aaron Pierre is the voice of Mufasa in Barry Jenkins’ upcoming Mufasa: The Lion King.

Wednesday, September 11th, 2024

ARTHUR THE KING (Starz)

• Synopsis: Over the course of ten days and 435 miles, an unbreakable bond is forged between pro adventure racer Michael Light and a scrappy street dog companion dubbed Arthur. As the team is pushed to their outer limits of endurance in the race, Arthur redefines what victory, loyalty and friendship truly mean.

• Fun Fact: Ukai plays Arthur in the film. The furry animal is a mix of three breeds: an Australian Shepherd, a Border Collie, and a Bouvier des Flandres.

Friday, September 13th, 2024

BOY KILLS WORLD (Hulu)

• Synopsis: When his family is murdered, a deaf-mute named Boy escapes to the jungle and is trained by a mysterious shaman to repress his childish imagination and become an instrument of death.

• Fun Fact: Pete Davidson was originally considered for the role of Boy.

CIVIL WAR (Max)

• Synopsis: In the near future, a group of war journalists attempt to survive while reporting the truth as the United States stands on the brink of civil war.

• Fun Fact: At a cost of $50 million, this is the most expensive A24 film, surpassing Beau Is Afraid (2023), which cost $35 million.

THE FEELING THAT THE TIME FOR DOING SOMETHING HAS PASSED (Hulu)

• Synopsis: A mosaic-style comedy following the life of a woman as time passes in her long-term casual BDSM relationship, low-level corporate job, and quarrelsome Jewish family.

• Fun Fact: Joanna Arnow's real life parents appear in the movie, playing her character Ann's parents.

IN A VIOLENT NATURE (Shudder, AMC+)

• Synopsis: The enigmatic resurrection, rampage, and retribution of an undead monster in a remote wilderness unleashes an iconic new killer after a locket is removed from a collapsed fire tower that entombed its rotting corpse.

• Fun Fact: The woman driver at the end of the film is played by Lauren-Marie Taylor, who played Vickie in Friday the 13th Part 2.

UGLIES (Netflix)

• Synopsis: In a futuristic dystopia with enforced beauty standards, a teen awaiting mandatory cosmetic surgery embarks on a journey to find her missing friend.

• Fun Fact: Joey King, who is a fan of the books the movie is based on, has said that Tally Youngblood has been one of her dream roles for years.

Tuesday, September 17th, 2024

CLOSE TO YOU (VOD/Digital)

• Synopsis: A trans man returns to his hometown for the first time in years. On his journey, he confronts his relationship with his family, reunites with a first love, and discovers a newfound confidence in himself.

• Fun Fact: The movie's dialog is mostly improvised following a written script outline.

HANDLING THE UNDEAD (Hulu)

• Synopsis: On a hot summer day in Oslo, the dead mysteriously awaken, and three families are thrown into chaos when their deceased loved ones come back to them. Who are they, and what do they want?

• Fun Fact: Composer Peter Raeburn’s score won a Special Jury Prize at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

DANDELION (AMC+)

• Synopsis: It follows a singer-songwriter in a downward spiral as she takes a last effort gig at a motorcycle rally in South Dakota where she meets Casey, a guitarist who walked away from his dream long ago.

• Fun Fact: Actor Thomas Doherty played Sean Matthews on the Disney Channel musical series The Lodge, Harry Hook in the Descendants film franchise, and Max Wolfe in the HBO Max reboot of Gossip Girl.

HIS THREE DAUGHTERS (Netflix)

• Synopsis: Emotions run high when three estranged sisters reunite in a cramped New York City apartment to watch over their ailing father during his final days.

• Fun Fact: Netflix acquired worldwide rights for the film out of the Toronto International Film Festival for $7 million.

I SAW THE TV GLOW (Max)

• Synopsis: Teenager Owen is just trying to make it through life in the suburbs when his classmate Maddy introduces him to a mysterious late-night TV show — a vision of a supernatural world beneath their own. In the pale glow of the television, Owen’s view of reality begins to crack.

• Fun Fact: The font used in the credits for the Pink Opaque, the fictional television series in the film, is the same font used in the opening credits for Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

OMNI LOOP (VOD/Digital)

• Synopsis: Diagnosed with a black hole growing inside her chest and stuck in a loop reliving the last five days of her life, a 55-year-old wife and mother from Miami, Florida decides to solve time travel in order to go back and be the person she always intended to be.

• Fun Fact: The screenplay was selected for the 2017 Sundance Institute Screenwriting Lab, and in June 2023 received finishing funds for post-production from Amazon Studios and the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival.

APARTMENT 7A (Paramount+, VOD/Digital)

• Synopsis: A struggling young dancer finds herself drawn in by dark forces when a peculiar, well-connected older couple promise her a shot at fame.

• Fun Fact: Two-time Oscar winner Dianne Wiest plays Margaux ‘Minnie’ Castevet, the character Ruth Gordon played and won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in the original Rosemary’s Baby.

ODDITY (Shudder, AMC+)

• Synopsis: After the brutal murder of her twin sister, Darcy goes after those responsible by using haunted items as her tools for revenge.

• Fun Fact: One of the items in Darcy's room of haunted objects seen near the beginning of the film is the rabbit doll from Damian McCarthy's previous feature, Caveat.

REZ BALL (Netflix)

• Synopsis: After losing their star player, a high school basketball team rich in Native American heritage must bounce back to keep their championship dreams alive.

• Fun Fact: LeBron James serves as a producer on the film.

SLEEP (VOD/Digital)

• Synopsis: Hyun-su and Soo-jin are newlyweds. Seemingly out of nowhere, he starts talking in his sleep. “Someone’s inside.” From that night on, whenever he falls asleep, he transforms into someone else with no recollection of what happened the night before. Soo-jin is overwhelmed with anxiety that he’d hurt her family while she sleeps and can barely sleep a wink because of this irrational fear. Despite sleep treatment, Hyun-su’s sleepwalking only intensifies, and she begins to feel that her unborn child may be in danger…

• Fun Fact: Director Bong Joon-ho lauded the film as "the most unique horror film and the smartest debut film I've seen in 10 years."

WILL & HARPER (Netflix)

• Synopsis: When Will Ferrell finds out his close friend of 30 years is coming out as a trans woman, the two decide to embark on a cross-country road trip to process this new stage of their relationship in an intimate portrait of friendship, transition, and America.

• Fun Fact: Will Ferrell and Harper Steele co-wrote the comedy Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga.

WOLFS (Apple TV+)

• Synopsis: A professional fixer is hired to cover up a high profile crime. But when a second fixer shows up and the two "lone wolves" are forced to work together, they find their night spiraling out of control in ways that neither one of them expected.

• Fun Fact: This is the fifth film in which real-life friends Brad Pitt and George Clooney star together on screen, after The Ocean's Trilogy and Burn After Reading (2008).

ASPHALT CITY (Hulu)

• Synopsis: A young paramedic is paired with a seasoned partner on the night shift in New York revealing a city in crisis. Discovering the chaos firsthand, he is tested with the ethical ambiguity that can be the difference between life and death.

• Fun Fact: Sean Penn and Tye Sheridan previously played brothers in 2011’s The Tree of Life.

Monday, September 30th, 2024

BABES (Hulu)

• Synopsis: After getting pregnant from a one-night stand, a single woman leans on her married best friend and mother of two to guide her through gestation and beyond.

• Fun Fact: Pamela Adlon, making her feature directorial debut, is the voice of Bobby Hill on the animated series King of the Hill.

THE STRANGERS: CHAPTER 1 (Starz)

• Synopsis: After their car breaks down in an eerie small town, a young couple are forced to spend the night in a remote cabin. Panic ensues as they are terrorized by three masked strangers who strike with no mercy and seemingly no motives.

• Fun Fact: The Strangers: Chapter 2 still doesn’t have a theatrical release date.
